Kneel Before Mortensen

This is odd.  Zack Snyder had pretty much confirmed that General Zod would not be the villain in the latest Superman movie.  And yet now we have word that Viggo Mortensen, best know to nerds as Aragorn, will play the perfidious Kryptonian.

Zod is unique amongst superhero villains in that he is barely known for his appearances in the comics.  When you think Zod, you think of Terrence Stamp in Superman II.  Like many DC villains, his origin story has changed several times over the years, but the key facts are that he is a Kryptonian and the you will kneel before him, or die.  Zod is one of the few Superman villains who can give the Man of Steel a physical challenge as well as an emotional one, making him a perfect choice for the reboot.

So how about Mortensen?  I think he would be make a nice fit for the dastardly villain, and his skill as an actor certainly helps his case.  Although we all remember him from the Lord of the Rings, I think his best role was actually in Eastern Promises where he played a badass Russian mobster.  I don't think he would give the same pompous, almost aristocratic performance of Terrence Stamp, but I don't think he has to.  Expect something much colder and chilling, but with all the same arrogance.  Time will tell if this rumor pans out, but I could certainly accept it.

Funny side note, in the end of the Return of the King, Aragorn tells the four the hobbits that they "bow to no one".  It's weird, yknow, cuz Zod wants the whole world to bow to him.

....
I think it's interesting....
